Mintaro
A near-perfectly preserved 1850s slate-mining village, home to Martindale Hall and the Mintaro Maze.
A village frozen in time
Mintaro is one of South Australia's most intact 19th-century villages, State Heritage-listed in its entirety and built from the local slate that was quarried here. Narrow lanes, stone cottages and the old Magpie & Stump Hotel give it a storybook feel. Just outside town stands Martindale Hall, the grand 1880 Georgian manor made famous by Picnic at Hanging Rock, while the Mintaro Maze offers a hedge-walled diversion for families.
