Burra
A historic copper-mining town to the valley's north-east, famous for its open-air heritage trail.
Australia's copper cradle
Burra grew up around the "Monster Mine" — the Burra Burra copper mine that helped save colonial South Australia from bankruptcy in the 1840s. Today the whole town is a heritage destination: the self-guided Burra Heritage Passport unlocks the mine site, the miners' dugouts at the creek, Redruth Gaol, the Bon Accord mine and rows of Cornish-style cottages. It's one of the best-preserved mining landscapes in the country.
