Mount Bryan Summit

The roof of the Mount Lofty Ranges, on the Heysen Trail.

At 936 metres, Mount Bryan northeast of Burra is the highest point in the Mount Lofty Ranges, crossed by the Heysen Trail with vast views over the Mid North.

The highest ground in the entire Mount Lofty Ranges is not in the Adelaide Hills but in the windswept country northeast of Burra. Mount Bryan tops out at 936 metres, and the summit rewards walkers with enormous views across the Mid North — bare rolling ridgelines, wind farms and wheat country running to the horizon.

The Heysen Trail crosses the summit on its long journey from Cape Jervis to the Flinders Ranges, climbing from the Hallett side past the historic one-room Mount Bryan East school, which now serves as a hikers' shelter. Walkers tackling just this section should come prepared: the route crosses exposed farmland, and conditions on top can be fierce in any season.

For most visitors it makes a serious half-day walk from the Burra district; gentler hinterland alternatives include Red Banks Conservation Park and the waterholes of Burra Creek Gorge.
