Burra Creek Gorge
A peaceful gorge and bush-camping spot south of Burra, popular with birdwatchers and stargazers.
A short drive south of Burra, the creek carves a quiet gorge through the ranges that feels a world away from the town's mining history. Red gums line the watercourse, kangaroos graze at dusk, and the birdlife is excellent - it is a favourite of birdwatchers and bush campers alike.
The basic camping ground beside the creek is a long-loved spot for a night under remarkably dark skies, with stargazing that rewards anyone who lingers after sunset. By day, easy walking along the creek line and surrounding hills makes for gentle exploring.
It is the wilder, greener side of the Burra district - well worth the detour from the heritage trail.
