Brooks Lookout

A big-sky panorama over the Wakefield Plains, west of Clare.

Perched on the western scarp of the Clare hills, Brooks Lookout opens onto a vast panorama across the Blyth and Wakefield Plains, reaching toward Yorke Peninsula on a clear day.

The Clare Valley's lookouts mostly face vineyards; Brooks Lookout faces the opposite way. Opened in 2001 on land donated by a private landowner, it sits about 400 metres above the patchwork wheat country of the Blyth and Wakefield Plains, with views running as far as 90 kilometres southwest toward Yorke Peninsula.

The reserve takes in two hectares of locally rare heathland, with many of the plants labelled, plus a picnic shelter, interpretive signage and a large car park. Sunset is the obvious time to come, when the plains glow and the Barunga and Hummocks Ranges stand against the western sky.

It makes a natural detour on the road between Clare and Blyth, and pairs well with the vineyard-facing outlooks at Billy Goat Hill for a two-sided view of the district. More viewpoints are gathered in where to find the Clare Valley's best views.
