Penwortham
The oldest settlement in the Clare Valley, founded by John Horrocks, with the Skillogalee winery nearby.
The first village
Penwortham was the first European settlement in the Clare Valley, established in 1839 by explorer John Horrocks. Little more than a cluster of stone buildings and the historic St Mark's Church today, it sits at the foot of the Skilly Hills among some of the valley's most scenic vineyard country. Skillogalee and other boutique cellar doors lie close by, and the Riesling Trail passes through on its way between Clare and Sevenhill.
