From hilltop lookouts to vineyard panoramas, here’s where to go in the Clare Valley when you want the view to take your breath away.
The Clare Valley rewards anyone willing to look up from their wine glass. Its rolling hills and patchwork vineyards make for some genuinely beautiful vantage points, several of them free and easy to reach.
Earn it with a short climb
Billy Goat Hill Lookout, above Clare township, asks for a brisk uphill walk and repays it with a wide view over the town and its vineyards, particularly fine at sunset. Neagles Rock, also near Clare, offers another classic outlook over the valley.
Views without the walk
For a panorama you can almost drive to, Watervale Lookout opens onto the celebrated southern sub-region, rows of vines rolling toward the ranges. Several cellar doors, perched on the valley's slopes, fold the view into the tasting itself.
Timing is everything
The valley is at its most photogenic in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon, when the low sun rakes across the vines. Time a lookout for golden hour and the Clare Valley will give you a view you won't forget.
