Should you come for the May Gourmet Weekend, the autumn vines, or a quiet winter by the fire? A season-by-season guide to timing your Clare Valley trip.
Autumn (March to May)
For many, autumn is the Clare Valley at its best. The vines turn gold and russet, the harvest brings a buzz to the cellar doors, and the weather is warm by day and cool by night — perfect for cycling the Riesling Trail. The crowning event is the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend in May, the region's flagship food-and-wine festival, so book accommodation well ahead.
Winter (June to August)
Winter is the valley's secret season: quiet cellar doors, open fires in heritage pubs, and the chance to taste with the winemakers themselves without the crowds. It can be cold and grey, but a long lunch with a glass of aged Shiraz beside a fire is its own reward — and rooms are easier to find.
Spring (September to November)
Spring brings wildflowers to the conservation parks, fresh growth to the vineyards, and mild, bright days ideal for walking and riding. It is a lovely, uncrowded time to explore the heritage towns of Mintaro and Burra before the summer heat arrives.
Summer (December to February)
Summer is hot in the Clare Valley, with days that can climb well above 30 degrees. Start early, keep to the shade, and lean into the cool of the cellar doors. It is a fine time for a relaxed pool-side stay, though serious cyclists will want to ride in the cool of the morning.
So when should you come?
If you want one answer: autumn, for the colour, the harvest energy and the Gourmet Weekend. But the truth is the valley rewards a visit in any season — each simply offers a different kind of day.
