Tim Gramp, a fifth-generation member of one of Australia's great winemaking families, pours trophy-winning Watervale shiraz and riesling at his small cellar door near Leasingham.
The Gramp name runs deep in Australian wine - the family founded the Orlando wine business in the Barossa - and fifth-generation winemaker Tim Gramp carries it on in the southern Clare Valley. His first wine, a 1991 shiraz, won a trophy and six gold medals, and his Watervale shiraz has since claimed Champion Dry Red Wine of Australia at the Small Winemakers National Wine Show three times.
The cellar door sits on Mintaro Road in the quiet hamlet of Leasingham, a couple of kilometres south of Watervale, drawing on single-site vineyards in the famous Watervale sub-region. Tastings are intimate and personal - often with the winemaker himself.
It is an easy add-on to a Watervale tasting loop, and the back road continues east toward the slate village of Mintaro for an afternoon of heritage to balance the morning's wine.
