Grosset Wines
Jeffrey Grosset is the benchmark of Australian Riesling, and his tiny Auburn cellar door pours the Polish Hill and Springvale wines that made the region famous.
Few names carry as much weight in Australian wine as Grosset. Since 1981, Jeffrey Grosset has crafted Riesling of such precision from his Polish Hill and Springvale vineyards that wine writers reach for words like "benchmark" and "reference point" — and mean it. These are wines that age for decades and define what Clare Valley Riesling can be.
The cellar door occupies a former butter factory on the edge of Auburn, opening only during the warmer months and selling out fast. Alongside the famous Rieslings you'll find Gaia, an elegant Bordeaux-style red, and Apiana, a textured fiano-semillon blend. Tastings are unhurried and serious without being stuffy.
If you taste one Clare Valley Riesling in your life, it should probably be a Grosset. Visit early in the season — the flagship wines are allocated and frequently gone by autumn.
