Mount Horrocks Wines
Stephanie Toole pours her acclaimed Watervale Riesling and famous Cordon Cut dessert wine from the restored old Auburn railway station.
Mount Horrocks has one of the most charming cellar doors in the valley: the beautifully restored 1918 Auburn railway station, right on the Riesling Trail. Step off the bike path and onto the old platform for a tasting with winemaker Stephanie Toole, one of the region's most respected producers.
The estate is certified organic and biodynamic, and the wines show it — vivid, energetic Watervale Riesling, Shiraz and Nero d'Avola. But the cult wine is the Cordon Cut Riesling, a luscious dessert wine made by severing the canes and letting the fruit dehydrate on the vine before picking. It is one of Australia's great sweet wines.
The setting, the trail-side location and the quality in the glass make this an essential Clare Valley stop. Pick up a bottle, walk the platform, and look across to the old goods shed.
