Koonowla Wines
A historic Auburn estate dating to the 1890s, now replanted and producing estate Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet.
Koonowla has deep roots in Clare Valley history. First planted in the 1890s, the Auburn estate once shipped wine across the colony before fire and changing fortunes saw the vineyards fall away. Replanted from the 1990s, it is once again a working single-estate winery.
The range centres on estate-grown Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, all from the home vineyard around the historic homestead. The reds are generous and the Riesling classically dry, representing solid value for serious Clare fruit.
The heritage stone buildings and long view over the vines make this a quietly handsome stop near Auburn at the southern end of the valley.
