Stanley Grammar Country House
Sleep in Watervale's grand Victorian schoolhouse.
Watervale's landmark Stanley Grammar School (1858–1904) is now heritage-listed country house accommodation, its dormitories and classrooms reborn amid riesling country.
For half a century Watervale was a town with its own boarding school. Stanley Grammar School, founded and run by headmaster Joseph S. Cole, operated from 1858 to 1904, and its substantial stone building — begun in 1863 and extended upward in 1871 to add dormitories — still presides over the village.
Now on the South Australian Heritage Register, the old school has found a second life as Stanley Grammar Country House, offering characterful group and couple accommodation where pupils once recited their lessons. High ceilings, thick stone walls and period detail carry the history lightly.
The location is hard to beat for wine touring: the cellar doors of Watervale are minutes away, and dinner is a short stroll downhill at the Watervale Hotel, whose kitchen draws on its own organic farm.
