Blyth Cinema
A volunteer-run picture house in a heritage-listed lodge.
Since 2005, the little town of Blyth has run its own cinema inside a heritage-listed former Masonic lodge, screening new releases with proper Dolby sound and country hospitality.
Few towns of 400 people run their own cinema. Blyth does, and has since May 2005, when locals led by gallery owner Ian Roberts converted the town's heritage-listed sandstone Masonic lodge into a fully fitted picture house — laying an angled concrete floor, sourcing seats and curtains, and installing Dolby surround sound.
The main theatre seats 105, and a second 50-seat theatre opened in January 2022, so there is a choice of films in each session. A candy bar covers the popcorn, choc-tops and lollies. Sessions run on new releases, making it a genuine alternative to driving to the city for a film.
Blyth is about 12 kilometres west of Clare, and an evening screening combines neatly with sunset at Brooks Lookout on the way over the range from Clare.
